Legislative District 6 Questionaire Response
1) Do you have a good relationship with the Lt. Governor's office? If so, why? If not, what will you do to ensure that you develop a good relationship?
I have an excellent relationship with the Lt. Governor's Office. We have worked together on several projects over the years. We first met when I was touring Utah for the Aerospace Industry trying to develop businesses in Utah County to support aircraft manufacturing.
Before leaving for his Church Mission 16 months ago (the son serving in Puerto Rico as the other one is serving in Houston South Mission right now), my son applied for a Volunteer Internship with the Lt. Governor's Office. However, the Governor's Office, familiar with his work habits, exercised first rights and it ended up he Interned for the Governor in Constituents Affairs.
I have known the Lt. Governor and considered him a friend for almost two decades.
2)When was the last time you've read the following documents:
a. Declaration of Independence
When I was representing Utah at the Republican National Convention in Philly- 2000. It was inspiring to read it then.
b. U.S. Constitution
The entire thing at one sitting or what is relevant to what I am researching at the moment? I read Article XIV within the last week regarding a question that came up in an egroup. The entire Constitution at some time or other over the past 5-10 years. I have a copy of "The American Constitution Cases and Materials" by Wm B. Lockhart, Yale Kamisar & Jesse H. Choper on my bookshelf and reference doing research. I am not an attorney.
c. Utah State Constitution
Like the U.S. Constitution I have read sections of it here and there depending upon the subject I am researching at the moment. The last time was about a year ago. Over the last 5-10 years I have read it all.
d. Utah State Republican Party Constitution
Yesterday. I stay up on this because I since 2002 I have served on or Chaired the Salt Lake County Convention and/or State Convention Rules Committee.
e. Utah State Republican Party Platform
Within the last month. A friend and I were discussing some issues on it.
3) For any of the documents in question 2 that you have not read, will you commit to reading them before taking office?
Not applicable, but I do read them often as I research various issues.
4) Do you believe in God? Should a belief in God have any impact on Governmental philosophy? (Note I am not asking if you belong to a specific church, or any church at all—that's not the point of this question.)
Yes and yes. I believe the reason our country is as great as it is comes from the Judeo-Christian Philosophies impact on our government at its foundation. I note those belief also allows for respecting others' belief in their form of God or no God at all.
If elected, what will be your first one or two priorities to address?
1- Resource Management- Monday, June 11th I will be at Party HQ doing an inventory on what needs to be tracked in a Data Library, Supplies on hand, and our fiscal situation. Then, I will immediately begin organizing what we have, discovering what we need and do not have, and determining how to fill the holes.
2- Communications- Call all the County Chairs, Elected Officials and others as possible to ask them of what they need and how to contact me- Jack Powers 801-495-9392
